Brief Bio
Dr. Andrés Colubri is Assistant Professor in the Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology program at UMass Chan Medical School. His team brings together computational scientists, software engineers, and visual designers to develop new methods and tools for infectious disease research. Together with partners at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, he created Operation Outbreak, the world's first live, app-based outbreak simulator to generate ground-truth datasets, validate predictive models, and improve the response to future pandemics. Andrés is also a senior member of the Processing project, an open-source programming language and environment widely used for teaching and production in for digital arts and design. He developed Processing’s 3D renderer, video library, and Processing for Android, and uses Processing as a tool to bridge his interests in computer graphics, data visualization, and biomedical research. Andrés originally studied Physics and Mathematics in Argentina and later did an MFA in the Design Media Arts Department at UCLA. By seeking collaborations at the intersection of epidemiology, genomics, machine learning, data visualization, and mobile technologies, the main goal of the Colubri Lab (CoLabo) is advancing an interdisciplinary vision of outbreak science.

SCOPE
This session is dedicated to applications of data visualization and information design in understanding infectious disease outbreaks. Papers in this session will explore how novel visual representations and algorithms can help to gain insight from complex outbreak datasets. This session welcomes epidemiologists, data scientists, public health experts, and visualization enthusiasts to share breakthroughs, techniques, and innovations in the field. The COVID-19 pandemic brought visualization of outbreak data to the forefront, specially thanks to “situation dashboards” that were shown on the news around the world, but also had several limitations, including data presentation biases, overwhelming complexity, and lack of context. The primary goal of this session is to explore new visualization approaches that could overcome these limitations during future outbreaks.

After thorough reviewing by the special session program committee, all accepted papers will be published in a special section of the conference proceedings book - under an ISBN reference and on digital support - and submitted for indexation by SCOPUS, Google Scholar, DBLP, Semantic Scholar, EI and Web of Science / Conference Proceedings Citation Index.
