Brief Bio
Prof. Anastasios D. Doulamis received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1995 with the highest honor. In 2001, he has received the PhD degree in video analysis from the NTUA. Until January 2014, he was an associate professor at the Technical University of Crete and now is a faculty member of NTUA. Prof. A. Doulamis has received several awards in his studies, including the Best Greek Student Engineer, Best Graduate Thesis Award, National Scholarship Foundation prize, etc. He has also served as program committee in several major conferences of IEEE and ACM. He is author of more than 200 papers receiving more than 3000 citations.

Brief Bio
Tania Stathaki was born in Athens, Hellas. In June 1991 she received the Soloist Diploma in Classical Piano from the Orfeion Athens Conservatory of Music. In September 1991 she received the Masters degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). She received the Ph.D. degree in Signal Processing fromImperial College in September 1994. She is currently a Reader in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Imperial College. Previously, she was Lecturer in the Department of Information Systems and Computing of Brunel University in UK, Visiting Lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department of Mahanakorn University in Thailand and Assistant Professor in the Department of Technology Education and Digital Systems of the University of Pireus in Greece. Her current research interests lie in the areas of signal and image processing and computer vision.
Nikolaos Doulamis

Brief Bio
Prof. Nikolaos Doulamis received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1995 with the highest honor and the PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering from NTUA in 2000. He joined the Image, Video and Multimedia Lab of NTUA in 1996 as research assistant. His PhD thesis was supported by the Bodosakis Foundation Scholarship. Since 2005-2008, he was visiting professor at the National Technical University of Athens. He is now Assistant professor at the National Technical University of Athens. Dr. Doulamis was awarded as the Best Greek Student in the field of engineering in national level by the Technical chamber of Greece in 1995. In 1996, he was received the Best Graduate Thesis Award in the area of electrical engineering. During his studies he has also received several prizes and awards from the National Technical University of Athens, the National Scholarship Foundation and the Technical Chamber of Greece. In 1997, he was given the NTUA Medal as Best Young Engineer. He is author of more than 180 articles in the area of multimedia and computer vision. More than 50 of them are journal papers of impact impact. Prof. Nikolaos Doulamis is currently involved in many European Projects like, eVacuate IP, Robinpect, ZoneSec, Vimsen, Inarchus and the national projects Viopolis, Pericles, Endecon. He was also involved in many other European research projects, such as SOCIOS, OLYMPIC, e-Director, Saragen, GRIA, GRIBLAD, AKOGRIMO in the area of multimedia processing. He has served as general program chair of the 1st ACM AREA, and all the ARTEMIS workshops. He is also general chair of more than 10 workshops in this area and TPC in more than 40 conferences.
Nikos Grammalidis

Brief Bio
Nikos Grammalidis is a Senior Researcher (Researcher Grade B) at the Information Technologies Institute - Centre of Research and Technology Hellas. He received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 1992 and 2000, respectively. Prior to his current position, he was a researcher in 3D Imaging Laboratory at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His main research interests include computer vision, signal, image and video processing, stereoscopy and multiview image sequence analysis and coding. His involvement with those research areas has led to the co-authoring of more than 25 articles in refereed journals and more than 75 papers in international conferences. Since 1992, he has been actively involved in more than 25 EC and National projects. He has served as a regular reviewer for a number of international journals and conferences.
Athanasios Voulodimos

Brief Bio
Dr. Athanasios S. Voulodimos received his Dipl.-Ing., MSc and PhD degrees from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2007, 2010 and 2011 respectively, ranking at the top of his class with the highest honor. He has been involved in several European research projects as senior researcher and technical manager. He is the author of more than 70 papers in international journals, conference proceedings and books in the research areas of machine learning, computer vision and multimedia analysis.

SCOPE

The development of a variety of new image capturing devices and soft sensors, coupled with the rapid advancements in machine learning and pattern recognition have unleashed new possibilities in the full range of visual computing fields. These advances have already started bringing about significant development to many areas of interest to the engineering community. The proliferation of data, combined with effective means to obtain, manage, process and analyze massive volumes of visual data, is driving innovation and appears to be one of the key disruptive enablers in engineering. The aim of this Special Session is to explore visual computing techniques (computer vision, image processing, computer graphics, visualization, AR/VR) for all types of engineering applications.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) visual computing methods for:
  • Robotics and automation, machine vision applications, video surveillance and monitoring
  • Electrical and mechanical engineering, production management and optimization, manufacturing, failure detection, industrial inspection
  • Civil engineering, construction management and optimization, structural health monitoring, earthquake engineering, urban planning
  • Industrial inspection
  • Environmental monitoring and early detection of natural hazards
  • Surveying and geospatial engineering, remote sensing and geosciences
  • Cultural heritage applications (restoration, large-scale digitization, material characterization)

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers in any of the topics listed above.

PUBLICATIONS

After thorough reviewing by the special session program committee, all accepted papers will be published in a special section of the conference proceedings book - under an ISBN reference and on digital support - and submitted for indexation by DBLP, Web of Science / Conference Proceedings Citation Index, EI and SCOPUS.

Selected papers addressing large scale visual computing problems will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers to a Special Issue of the Frontiers in Robotics and AI journal.
